» nesteditor - good sugars

I am on a slimming world diet and have been using sweetners instead of sugar in tea and sprinkled on grapefruit etc. I could replace this with honey in tea but wondered what you would recommend elsewhere. I live in the UK so I am not sure if we have the same products as the US.
I found your article very interesting and a great eye opener as I am on a diet more for my health and self esteem than to actually lose weight (which is a bonus of course) but really to get over my issues with food and over eating problems. I don't want to risk my health further by using sweetners that are halmful as this will defeat the object.

Hi nesteditor,

As far as I know, all of the healthy sweeteners mentioned in my article are available in the UK, just as in the States or Canada - with the possible exception of maple syrup, which may be pricier there. Agave and stevia aren't native plants in Canada, either, so they are routinely imported. I'm pretty sure you can find both in health food stores throughout the UK.

If you're concerned about weight loss or caloric intake, you might want to avoid honey in favour of agave or stevia. Agave and stevia are also lower on the glycemic index and are better for you.

Best wishes in your endeavors to improve your health,
~Victoria

My family has used Stevia for several years now and it helped my parents in exact opposite ways. My mother stabilized er blood sugar levels and gained 5 extra pounds she desperately needed while my father gently lost about 15 pounds over the first six months of making the switch from sugar to stevia. :-)

Congrats on investigating healthier options!
