» Feature Writer Victoria Anisman-Reiner - I'm Not Gay, Lesbian, or Bi, but...

Since the "Gay Rights" section is currently unmoderated, no one has been able to post a response there.

I thought I'd start a discussion thread here for anyone who wants to comment on the article "I'm not Gay, Lesbian, or Bi, But..." on the Gay Rights/Homophobia section of suite.

Any thoughts?

I'll bite.

I like your article. Basically I feel the reason most people do this, though, is because they don't want to make assumptions, or speak on behalf of a group they don't "belong" to. Just like a white person wouldn't want to make an assumption about what it's like to be black, but obviously they don't have to start the sentence with "I'm not black, but..."

Being a bisexual female, I've seen this from two perspectives. On the one hand they want to appeal to their fellow heterosexuals and appear politically correct in not judging a group of people to which they don't belong. They then also are simultaneously trying not to irk the LGBTQ crowd by appearing as if they know what they're talking about from a personal perspective. Because they don't always know what it's like to live through some of the prejudice, and they don't want to claim to know.

I get where they are coming from, even though I agree that perhaps it will not feel so segregated if we can drop it all and speak openly without feeling we will be judged.
