Good Afternoon!
I was curious about something you brought up in another discussion: knowing the best grade of essential oils available.
How can you tell a good essential oil from one that is an inferior product?
Is there an outlet for essential oils that you could recommend?

Thank you, Connie! This is a great question that really deserves a few thousand words in response. Briefly, however...

The only way to really know that your source of essential oils is a good one is to ask. Talk to people who use essential oils about how they source theirs; talk to your supplier; talk to the people growing the herbs and processing them to make the essential oil.

Virtually every company on the market today claims to be selling "the best quality aromatherapy oils" or essential oils that are "100% pure and organic" - but this isn't always the case. Labeling can be misleading. Manufacturers can claim to be selling "100% pure organic essential oil" if at least 1% of the contents of the bottle are organic EOs - and how an oil has been processed is just as important as whether it is organic.

A really good essential oil is one that has been grown organically, and pressed on site (where it is grown) at low temperatures and without chemical solvents or other additives.

Therapeutic-grade oils - the only ones I recommend - are so pure that they are safe to use internally, as well as on your body and by inhaling the fragrance. This is not true of most oils that you'll find for sale in stores (many, in fact, carry warnings against ingesting them or using them on your skin - that's one way to tell that they are not pure).

The oils that I use, personally, are from a company called Young Living Essential Oils. They can be found online at http://www.youngliving.com, but they do require a referral number. If you'd like more information, I'm happy to answer any questions by email at naturalmedicine@suite101.com
