This is another of my Toronto-centric blog postings. For those who find the shopping for organic fruits and veggies an inconvenience, or the cost prohibitive, there is a solution, right here at home! Toronto has two great outdoor organic markets in the heart of the city - and possibly more that I'm not aware of.
High Park Organic Market
The High Park Organic Market is a low-key, little-known weekend treasure nestled in the heart of High Park.
It is absolutely the best source for inexpensively-priced organic produce. Not everything is organic, but each item is clearly labelled and most are either organically-grown or "pesticide-free." If you can find better prices anywhere in the city for good quality organic produce, please let me know!
The High Park market also offers fresh breads and baked goods.
You can find the High Park Organic Market under canvas tents adjacent to the (lousy) Grenadier Cafe every Friday afternoon from 12 to 7 pm and all day Saturday and Sunday (9 am to 6 pm) from late May to the end of October.
Dufferin Grove Park Organic Farmers' Market
The Dufferin Grove Organic Market is a bustling year-round market that has been around since 2002. The focus is on community, making good use of the beautiful park, and on produce that is local or free trade as well as organic. The market hosts dozens of independent farmers, natural chefs and other food sellers who each set up a table to display and sell their wares.
In addition to fruit and veggies, this market features potted live herbs, fresh bread, organic meats, prepared baked goods, a barbeque and usually fresh soup by the cup.
The market is a fun, busy event conveniently located on Dufferin Street within walking distance of the Dufferin subway. The market runs every Thursday from 3 until 7 p.m.
