This morning, in a modern-day stunt reminiscent of the Boston Tea Party, Canadian Greenpeace activists deposited 5 tons of Quebec-grown GMO corn in front of Quebec Liberal Party headquarters. The GMO corn was dumped to make a statement to newly reelected Prime Minister Jean Charest about frustration at his broken promises about GMO labelling.
In 2003, Mr. Charest promised to enact mandatory labelling in Quebec of foods containing genetically modified ingredients. So far, this promise has not been honoured.
According to Greenpeace, 40 countries worldwide have already mandated clear labelling of GMO or GE (genetically engineered) food. At least 80% of Quebeccers support mandatory labelling of GMOs for a combination of health and environmental reasons.
