A Few Small Steps to Feel Better Overall

Jan 31, 2009 Lisa Annunziato

Often people just don't have the time to take care of themselves, and they slowly start to see a decline in energy, a few more pounds gained, and general dissatisfaction.

Life is there to live, but if you don't treat your body well, you may not be getting the most you can out of life. That's why it is so important to adopt a healthier lifestyle in order to experience life at its fullest. The problem is, this concept of living healthier often scares people because they fear they will have to do a total overhaul of their whole life. It really doesn't have to be that difficult. Here are some easy tricks you can do to amp up your life for better health and increased livelihood.

Sleep More

Sleep is well-documented as one of the best ways to build immunity and ward off stress. Make sure you're getting the recommended eight hours a night. Easier said than done, right? Make a commitment at a certain time each night to turn off your phone, close your computer, turn off the TV, relax, and do something soothing to ease yourself into sleep. The world will not explode if you are not there to supervise it!

Get Moving

Exercise is the best way to fight the major diseases that plague today's society, like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and even certain types of cancer. Exercise also gives you more energy, a better mental focus, a deeper sleep, and makes you physically better looking! A commitment to a gym might seem too much for a busy person to handle. Why not try an activity you enjoy that lets you blow off steam, like taking a dance class? Or, if you're too busy for that, you can take your dog for a jog or even purchase a work out video to do in the privacy of your own home. Even three work outs per week will make a real difference in the quality of life you experience.

Moderation

This is a concept many people struggle with. A piece of chocolate cake is not bad, but a whole chocolate cake in one sitting will cause stomach aches and weight gain if repeated on a regular basis. A glass of wine or two per week is actually good for your heart, but a bottle of wine per night is surely detrimental to your health. A cup or two of coffee in the morning will keep you awake and make you more energetic, but constant coffee consumption can cause anxiety, addiction, and poor sleep. Try eating smaller meals and moderating potential addictive substances, and you are sure to reap the benefits with a slimmer, healthier, better-functioning you.

Eat More Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables build immunity, fight cancers, regulate digestion, and give you energy. You should be consuming a rainbow of colors of fruits and veggies as often as you can, since different colors are rich in different vitamins that can increase health in different ways. Fruits and vegetables also fill you up with their fiber content, leaving less room to over eat. So, next time you go to the store, pick up some favorites and pack them as a mid-day work snack.

Try a Multi-Vitamin

The American Medical Association has recently changed its stance to say that people should be consuming vitamins. Taking a high quality food-based multi vitamin can fill in the gaps where the food you have eaten didn't measure up, thereby giving you more energy, and better over-all functioning. Go to a health food store and ask about the best quality and highest purity multi-vitamin they sell. Steer away from anything with a lot of additional fillers that aren't good for you.

After a few weeks, these small steps can make a real difference with minimal effort. You're well on your way to feeling great!
