Herbs and Food as Rosacea Treatments

Sep 5, 2009 Jennifer Graham

Vitamin B foods are recommended for people with rosacea. Treatments that can also reduce inflammation from rosacea include omega-3 fatty acids and chamomile.

There are some natural treatments for rosacea that can help keep this skin condition from worsening. It is important to start actively treating the affected area at the first sign of symptoms. Rosacea causes the skin to become inflamed, causing redness and an uneven texture to appear on the surface of the affected area. This condition is sometimes mistaken for eczema and skin allergies.

According to Mayo Clinic, rosacea mostly occurs among adults who are in their thirties or forties. A person can have bouts with rosecea that last for several days to a few months. Then the symptoms may disappear for a while. Rosacea can cause small red bumps, swollen blood vessels that become visible on the cheeks and nose, and cause a flushed appearance.

Rosacea Herbal Treatment

Chamomile can be effective as a rosacea herbal treatment. Chamomile is used for a variety of healing purposes. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, this herb is showing promise as an effective treatment for some skin conditions. It is available in the form of liquid extracts, capsules, teas, and cream.

According to 1,801 Home Remedies by the editors of Reader's Digest (Reader's Digest, April 2004), chamomile works best as a treatment for rosacea when it used as a diluted tea. Place a bunch of chamomile tea bags into three cups of boiling water and let it steep for about 10 minutes. Pour the liquid out and cool it in the refrigerator. Place the tea on the affected area as needed.

Rosacea Diet

Certain foods can help reverse symptoms of certain skin conditions including rosacea. Diet can play a crucial role in keeping skin cells functioning properly. The importance of eating healthy is emphasized in Prescription for Natural Cures by James F. Balch and Mark Stengler (John Wiley & Sons, September 30, 2004).

The authors point out that people with rosacea should regularly eat fresh fruits and vegetables because they are necessary to keep the skin healthy and circulating properly. Green leafy vegetables, in particular, contain beneficial nutrients. Nuts, sprouts, and seeds are also good treatments for rosacea because they have enzymes that are good for the skin.

Foods containing vitamin B are recommended for people who have rosacea. In fact it is not uncommon for people with rosecea to have a vitamin B deficiency. Good sources of vitamin B include oats, whole grain bread, brown rice, crackers, and wheat germ. It's also important to eat foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. These essential fats reduce inflammation. Fish such as salmon and tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

Don't eat foods that are high in fat, caffeine, sugar, spices, and salt. They can cause blood vessels just beneath the surface of the skin to expand and swell. Foods that are hot, such as soups and teas can also worsen rosecea. Eating the right foods, while avoiding others is important to the success of a rosecea diet.
