Healing for the Age of Enlightenment lemon cleanse, cover by Burroughs Books
Stanley Burroughs' Master Cleanse is one of the most powerful ways to cleanse heavy metals and candida from the body for optimal health and quick, healthy weight loss.

Cleansing is necessary to keep our bodies functioning at their best. Pollution from the environment, oxidative stress, and additives (pesticides, chemical colors and flavorings) in our water and food are stored in organs and fatty tissue and build up in our bodies over time. Cleansing this toxic load can help to boost the immune system, improve vitality, get rid of headaches, allergies, fatigue, pain, arthritis and other symptoms, and can result in substantial weight loss. One of the most powerful dietary cleanses is the Lemon Cleanse or Master Cleanse.

Where the Lemon Cleanse Began

The lemon cleanse was developed by Stanley Burroughs and is laid out in his 1976 book, Healing for the Age of Enlightenment. The book addresses several unconventional aspects of health care, including Vita Flex reflexology, color therapy, and the lemon cleanse. A smaller book by Burroughs, The Master Cleanser, covers only the cleanse.

Despite the wealth of information about the master cleanse that is available on the internet and by word of mouth, it is advisable to read one of these books before attempting the lemon cleanse to get the details right and avoid adverse effects.

What is the Master Cleanse?

The master cleanse consists of 6 to 12 glasses a day of:

  • juice of 1/2 a lemon
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/10 tsp cayenne pepper (or less, to taste)
  • 8 oz water

This protocol is used for at least ten days, although the cleanse may be followed for up to a month. The cleanse is completed when white buildup on the tongue fades and it appears pink again (showing all candida is gone).

Food is not consumed during the cleanse; instead, a glass or two of the “lemonade” mixture is consumed whenever hungry. A laxative tea is also used during the cleanse.

Special protocols are laid out for coming off of the master cleanse which should be followed completely.

Why Lemons?

Lemons are one of the best foods for the human body. They provide vitamins and minerals as well as making the body more alkaline and helping to cleanse.

Organic lemons are preferable for the cleanse.

Why Maple Syrup?

Maple syrup is one of the few unprocessed good sugars that provide micronutrients as well as calories to the body. It is high in minerals including zinc and manganese. For the Master Cleanse, Burroughs recommends grade B because it contains more minerals than the lighter grades of maple syrup. It is also less likely than grade A (light) syrup to contain formaldehyde.

If you prefer, agave may be substituted for maple syrup in the master cleanse.

Is the Master Cleanse a Fast or a Starvation Diet?

No.

The master cleanse is more gentle on the body than a fast. Most cleansing fasts leave a person incapacitated or in bed for their duration. On the master cleanse, the only inconvenience is making sure to have ready access to the ingredients. Many people report high energy levels and productivity even during the cleanse.

Maple syrup provides for the body’s caloric needs even as the lemon, cayenne, and high water intake encourage toxins and buildup to leave the body. Minerals and vitamins are provided by the mineral-rich maple syrup and lemon juice (which is high in vitamin C and other nutrients). The master cleanse is not intended to be used permanently, but it is completely safe in the short term provided the directions are closely followed.

The Primary Goal of a Cleanse Is Not Usually to Lose Weight...

...but substantial weight loss can be one result.

If you don’t want to lose weight or find you are losing weight too quickly, add more maple syrup to each glass of “lemonade” or increase your intake in glasses per day.

The master cleanse is not for everyone. Please read Burroughs’ book and consult with an expert before beginning the cleanse.

I think the diet was a great ideal but do i eat with this drink?
May 1, 2008 3:30 PM
Victoria Anisman-Reiner :
No, while doing a proper master cleanse you should eat/drink NOTHING except for the lemonade beverage and the tea prescribed for the cleanse.

I highly recommend that anyone considering doing such a cleanse read one of Stanley Burroughs books and reread the lemon cleanse instructions thoroughly to be sure to get the entire process right!

I do not always have access to real lemons. Can lemon juice be used? If so how much?

I started the master cleanse and only lasted 3 days on it. I developed on the 3rd day a sort of urinary tract infection. I stopped drinking the juice at night that day and just drinking water and through the night continued urinating. My urine became normal looking and no more burning sensation by the morning time. I most definetely had an adverse reaction to the ingredients. I will be going to the doctor this morning anyway to tell him this same story. My younger sister did the diet and lasted the whole 10 days. She had no adverse effects. Janet/Boynton Beach, FL

In response to "Guest," who asked about using "lemon juice" instead of "real lemons":

No, I would not recommend it. Most bottled lemon juices have other ingredients, either sweeteners or preservatives. Even if you can find a packaged lemon juice that contains nothing but lemon, the contents will not be the same as fresh-squeezed lemon juice. Juicers are often told that fruit and vegetable juices begin to lose their potency as quickly as ten minutes after being pressed. Anything bottled is not as "alive," for lack of a better term, than juice that came straight from the fruit.

I would recommend holding off on doing the cleanse until you have reliable access to fresh lemons for at least a ten day period.

My husband and I both started this cleanse today. We both have had 7 servings, when are we suppose to see the cleanse happen? What is the cyenne pepper suppose to do? I know that it happens with time, but is this something that is going to make us constipated? Sorry, that is the only way I know how to put it. Thank you. :)
May 14, 2008 11:25 AM
Victoria Anisman-Reiner :
Hi scrappnut,

I would highly recommend that you read either The Master Cleanser or Healing for the Age of Enlightenment by Stanley Burroughs, which details both the instructions for the proper cleanse and answers all of the questions you've asked. Briefly:

The cleanse takes 10 days or more to complete, but most people notice a change within their bodies in the first few days.

Cayenne pepper is cleansing and provides heat to the body, while you are not consuming much.

You should not feel constipated if you are using the laxative tea that Burroughs recommends, or a similar product.

Best of luck with your cleanse!

I am on day 3 of the cleanse today. I am a BIG food lover, and since I have a low income as an international student studying in the US, I generally eat what is cheap and filling. (Ususlly the over processed foods such as $1.25 frozen pizzas, the $0.33 burritos, and the good old $0.13 ramen noodles. Other than that I aet taco bell, churches chicken, chinese food, Jamaican patties, Wendy's etc... Nevertheless, on my day 3 I am not hungry. I hear that the body detoxes itself when it needs to and does not need the master cleanse to do so...but at least I am giving my body a break form food digestion, and I am getting my colon cleaned. (plus shedding a few pounds)

I've been on the master cleanse for 3 days now and I've drank 3 glasses of the laxative tea and still nothing has happened. Am I doing something wrong?
Jul 12, 2008 6:59 AM
Victoria Anisman-Reiner :
Dear CherryMoon,

That depends! What do you mean by "nothing has happened"?

If you are following the directions laid out in Stanley Burroughs' book, or in The Complete Master Cleanse by Tom Woloshyn, then you're doing just fine.

It sounds, however, like you may be following an incomplete set of instructions. Why have you had only three glasses of laxative tea, instead of six? You should be drinking the tea (or doing an internal salt water bath) morning and evening during this cleanse.

I highly suggest you refer back to one of the books that details how to do the cleanse properly, if you truly feel that "nothing is happening."

Just 2 weeks ago I cleansed my bowels for a colonoscopy. (I have them every 2 years due to ulcerative colitis but have been symptom free for 4 years after starting the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.) My question is... if I do the Master Cleanse will it continue to pull more toxins from my body than magnesium citrate will do? I'm assuming mag cit. will just empty the bowels not remove toxins?? thanks, Heather, age 37

In response to "Guest" of August 21, 2008:

No, I wouldn't suggest beginning a cleanse based on the information on this site alone. There are a lot of details and particular strategies for the cleanse that you're only going to find in one of the books devoted to this cleanse. If you can't find Burroughs' book, I highly recommend The Complete Master Cleanse by Tom Woloshyn - it may even be a better guide than Burrough's original writings. But please don't begin the cleanse without the book or supervision from an expert.

I started the Maaster Cleanse because of hives and some other skin rash that the dermatoligist and allergist couldn't figure out the cause. Since I have been on the cleanse, Day 3, I have had small blotches all over my body and hives in places I didn't have them before I started the clense. I am not discouraged. Should I be concerned?

Will doing the cleanse for a day or two have any benefits for your body? Or is it only good if used for the entire period?

I thank you for providing an in depth, informative article on the cleanse. It has received so much flack that it's been hard to find real details and instructions.
However, I have two questions:
I'm hesitant to include maple syrup while doing the cleanse. I'm afraid that consuming it in this way will make me queasy. I'm not a big fan of syrup unless it's on pancakes. If I leave out the maple syrup, will the cleanse still be worth doing and be effective?
And second, would it be okay for you to provide one or two recommended tips provided by Burroughs for coming off of the cleanse? I do not have access to his book(s) at the moment.
Again thank you very much for your help, Victoria.

By the way, I'm going to do the whole 30 with a girlfriend.

I just did the cleanse and it was wonderful. I didn't feel hungry and I had as much energy as I do when I eat. My digestive system got to rest for 10 days and I have lost 17 lbs. I feel great. I defintitly want to make sure my eating habits are better than they were before the cleanse. I highly recommend it if you are serious about your health and you have discipline. It's certainly a "mind over matter" challenge. Good luck!!

For anybody who has posted questions to this post about the master cleanse I would suggest, instead of waiting for a reply., go and purchase the book. Like Victoria has stated to recent post, it is the best way to understand the process. The book is only 6.50 at borders!, it's only about 50 pages. I read it over the weekend and plan on starting on tomorrow. It answers every question on here and lets you know what to expect and how to safely come off of the lemonade diet. Please if you are really interested in the master cleanser, GET THE BOOK! try borders.com for less expensive used copies, but honestly...6.50 is not bad!

Is there any other substitute for the cayenne that will be effective - Cayenne is the one thing I am allergic to - other peppers do not bother me; please advise if there is an alternative Thx

Victoria Anisman-Reiner :
I don't know of any substitute for the cayenne - it really is a very important part of the cleanse.

I suggest speaking with a holistic practitioner in your area who can advise you. For your information, Tom Woloshyn, a disciple of Burroughs, advises people to do the cleanse in its entirety even if you are allergic to cayenne - you can learn more from his book, The Complete Master Cleanse, reviewed at http://naturalmedicine.suite101.com/article.cfm/the_complete_master_cleanse _review

I not only have lost weight but am still lifting weights and am not craving anything. I am able to eat lunch with coworkers without temptation to go off the diet. This is awesome. I have fasted for 40 days on a few occassions but have never lost weight this fast before.

This master cleanse buisness is crazy-sure if you eat a surplus of maple syrup it will "provide for your caloric needs" but what about vitamins and minerals-protien is absolutley vital for healthy cell function. What about eliminating where the toxins and chemicals are coming from? Sure organic food is expensive but so is cancer. Lemon water daily and fresh, organic, local food is better-and stops problems before they start. Healthy habits=Healthy body.

Such critics...

Anyway, I'm on my third day of the cleanse. It has helped me to realize I tend to eat out of habit and not hunger. I have had moments of weakness to snack (on my usual healthier options) but I didn't give in. My girlfriend decided to do the cleanse with me so it makes it much easier to have the support.

I have moderate to severe asthma, so for the past few years I have made drastic changes in what I eat, how I eat and how I treat my body. It's bad enough I have to take these medications, but this cleanse has been a relief in more ways than one.

I already appreciate the fact that I want to be even more careful with food choices as I exit the cleanse.

Hi there, I have an important question about using this cleanse with my LPR reflux. I no longer take medication. To my surprise I discovered that if I drank GreensFirst every morning the symptoms don't bother me at all. I say suprise because I started taking after I had pneumonia to cleanse my liver and boost my immune system not as an antacid. I also noticed when I DON'T drink it for even 1-2 days that I have alot of symptoms. That brings me to the question of this cleanse: is the cayenne going to aggrevate my acid problems? And if I'm not allowed to drink the GreensFirst (all organic veggies and herbs) what if I start to have LPR symptoms? I plan to get the book today, but I don't know if this concern will be addressed.

Regarding Teeth...
I've been on the cleanse for a little over a week and have noticed that my teeth (on the tops of the molars) feel gummy/sticky.
At first I was worried that the lemon juice was eating at my tooth enamel so I began drinking the lemonade through a straw. I'm sure the gummy-ness was from the maple syrup...and the feeling is much less noticeable now that I'm using the straw.
I'm a bit of a teeth freak, and I assume that others are too, so I thought that I'd post this. Good luck everyone.

Hi everyone. I am on day 3 of my cleanse and I HIGHLY recommend reading the original book by Stanley Burroughs or going to Peter Glickman's site http://therawfoodsite.com/index.html. I found that the Burroughs/Glickman books and the website answer all the questions. Plus they include blogs of individual's concerns and questions. The one thing I have found is that the recipe MUST be followed exactly with no changes or exceptions for this to work. That means fresh organic lemons only, grade B maple syrup only, cayanne pepper to taste or 1/10 of a teaspoon, and you absolutely HAVE to do the salt water flush. I am on day three and have lost 4 pounds and feel pretty good. Good luck to everyone!

Ok, first off. You DO NOT have to follow the ingredients EXACTLY like it says. There is an alternate diet for people with or at risk for diabetes. It replaces the Grade B Syrup with Agave Nector, which tastes a whole helluva lot better! Second, I am just using it to lose pounds before my Military Physical Training Test comes around. So I've been using Aquafina Grape/Raspberry flavored water to help negate some of the monotony of lemons lemons lemons. I've been on it for about 6 days and have lost a solid 10lbs. So if you can't find the instructions for this product online, then you need to have someone help you, because all I see are people in here trying to sell the book.

Dear Guests,

I'm still around, and your comments are being read! However, I'm just not able to respond to every comment. Most of these questions repeat things that have already been answered in my original article or in the comments above, so I suggest you read this page thoroughly.

As for the rest, I highly recommend that you invest in either Stanley Burough's Master Cleanser, Healing for the Age of Englightenment, or the new book The Complete Master Cleanse by a student of Burroughs. You just can't do this cleanse properly without knowing all the details beforehand. Best wishes to all.

In response to some questions on this board:

I do not always have access to real lemons. Can lemon juice be used? If so how much? Yes. Although, lemons ARE recommended, limes can be used to replace them when they're not available. They both share cleaning/antimicrobrial properties, and can get the job done.

I've been on the master cleanse for 3 days now and I've drank 3 glasses of the laxative tea and still nothing has happened. Am I doing something wrong? You either 1) may be constipated 2) may not have much in your intestinal tract to release. My suggestion is to use a mild natural laxative like bentonite OR drink some natural green tea (YOGI ENERGY). You should also be doing the salt water flushes as recommended by Burroughs.

i tried it... i lasted one day, it was too hot.do you have to use the cayenne pepper? YES. YES. YES. However, cayenne capsules are a great alternative to powder. Many people do not enjoy adding this pepper to their drink and see the same benefits in taking 3-4 100mg capsules per day. They are available along with the Cayenne tincture (an easier way to measure on the go).

What kind of laxative tea is used with this cleanse? Smooth Move by Traditional Medicines has the best reviews.

I am on two daily medications and I also take a multivitamin every evening. Can I still take this during the cleanse? What about smoking? You need to ask your healthcare practitioner. Most likely, if the meds are vital to your health and well-being, you need to continue taking them. You should not smoke during the cleanse. One of the key goals during the cleanse is to eliminate the bad habits and addictions that your body has grown accustomed to.

smooth move is good lax. when things are going to plan, u will need to be close to a bath room. doing it 3 day once than 7 days nex, i found out if you can last 10 days your brain says you dont need that yucky food!I did this as a cleasner, and like i posted earlier, i still had eliminations after 21 days!!!! i only quit b cuz i quess i was getting out there as i chewed regular food but didnt swallow it, spit it out!. crazy Huh? well after a few days of that activity, which by the way ,it wasnt that unpleasant, I did decide that mayb just mayb,it wasn t cleansing or eating so i stopped and broke the fast.3 days like the book says.all in all about 26 days no solids. I felt great, had good eating habits.BUT need that cleaning and discipline again. Not the most pleasant experience but ! OH! almost forgot why i posted again. i think to do this correctly for whoever i woul say to continue as long as u hav eliminations or 30 days or whatever. if u quit while still having eliminations,,than have u completely! cleasned? so next time i do this that will be my goal. believe me while doing a cleanse, you main focus will be elimination of all those toxins leaving ur body ..mahalo this has given me the will power needed to do the cleanse once again

If you can't find cayenne pepper it's probably because it is usually labeled as ground red pepper, the vast majority of grocery stores carry it in their spice section.

I am currently on Day 6 of the Master Cleanse and I am doing a 10 day detox. I did really well in the beginning and then somewhere I started feeling hazy and sick. I decided to keep on it and I realized that the reason was not the cleanse at all but because I wasn't mixing it with enough water so I had become dehydrated. I drink it every 3 hours, 6 times a day and it is working really well. I got back on track and so far I am 8 pounds lighter as of this morning. I have not been able to get past my plateu no matter what I did but this detox is helping me achieve the weight loss so necessary to my health.

If you feel like you can't make it, you can. You really can. If you want a good routine, buy the July 13th, 2009 issue of First for Women magazine. It helped to incourage me and figure out what I should do. It even has a plan where you can eat some if you don't want to go full liquid, and still get results.

Good luck to all of you ^^

For those of you asking about substitutes for the pepper, i believe it is only added for flavor. if you don't like it, leave it out

I tried the master cleanse on Tuesday and because I did not eat at all on Monday before the starting the diet, I could not continue after 12:30 so, yes I broke it and had a small piece of chicken and two pieces of broccoli. However I bought enough supplies for me to start tomorrow and hopefully I will last this time.Mother always said try and try and try until you succed and that I will do. I will let you know how well I did soon.

the cayenne pepper inhibits the weightloss, it cleans you out and helps burn fat from the body. If the pepper bothers you, try to find it in capsule form, and take one with the drink.

You can find laxative tea at your local health food grocery store. Also, if you do not feel the laxative is working you can use the alternative for salt water flush. I use the salt water flush, I find it works better and quicker. It is not tasty, be forewarned. :)
1 tsp to 1 tbsp sea salt (depending on what amt works better) to 1 liter (32 oz) of water
It can work as soon as 5 mins to 90 mins. Make sure you do this in the time of day where you can stay at home and not run errands. Be prepared to sit in the bathroom for awhile, dont drink it and leave for work/school because you might have an accident!
Good luck!

i am doing the cleanse and instead of adding the pepper to my drink i take it in the form of a pill. and i got the non burning pepper tablet so i get the same nutritional benefit but withought the taste and the burn. so for everyone who hates the pepper go to your nearest organich store (where i found it) and get the tablets. makes it all so much easier.

I am Bonnie Jo, and am interested in doing the master cleanse. I am not doing it so much to loose weight, even though that is my ultimate goal, I am doing it as a restart. Hoping that it will help with the cravings for food that I have been having lately! I was just wondering if anyone else has had success in the cleanse helping with food addictions like they say it will help other addictions? Thank you in advance!

Hi, Bonnie Jo. I am only on day one (halfway through)and was really sceptical yesterday that I would not last because I truly enjoy food. Food is wonderful in all its forms and I have all this fresh, teriffic fruit, seafood, salad, veggies, etc in my refrigerator right now (we generally eat healthy) and thought this morning that I would be wanting it SO bad.
However, not the case! Have had 4 glasses (doing it about every 1-1/2 hrs) and no hunger. When I do start feeling a little hungry, drink plain purified/bottled water and it's gone. You can drink regular water all day while you're doing this, just as long as you're sticking with your lemon drink intake as needed. Plus the tea can help too, which mixes it up a little so you don't get tired of it.
I'm doing this purely to shed a couple pounds and eat less and it is totally working so far. I am optomistic that I will be able to keep this up.
Good luck!

I am on Day 1 of the cleanse. This is the recipe I've found and am following. Add 7 tbsp of FRESH lemon juice and 7 tbsp of maple syrup and 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper to a 1 liter container, then fill to top with distilled water. After I finish the first bottle I will prepare another the same way and finish that. I will also be drinking room temperature water throughout the day. I will do the sea salt water flush (2 tsp added to a quart of water) in the morning.

I learned that the water and lemonade drink shouldn't be cold. I also read on several sites that there is no mineral or nutritional difference between Grade A and Grade B maple syrup. The lemon gives you important minerals as does the maple syprup, which also gives you necessary calories. The cayenne pepper gives your body heat since you are not digesting food during the cleanse.

Also, what I think helped me was my pre-cleanse regimen, which last ed 3 days. The first day I ate only fersh fruit and vegetables. The second day I ate only the juice of fruits and vegetables and some vegetable broth for dinner. Then the 3rd day, yesterday, I drank only fresh squeezed orange juice mixed half and half with water to prepare me for the liquid diet. So far today I am not hungry at all and feel great. Much better than starting cold turkey!!!

The reason this cleanse is effective is that it stimulates bile production in the liver and helps the liver process the toxins out of your body. Also the liver is the only organ that can process the excess fat in your body and release it through your urine. The lemons or limes stimulate the bile (which process the fat and toxins), the water flush the toxins out of the liver, the maple syrup provides the glucose (energy) that your body, organs and brain need to function on a daily basis. The reason they tell you to drink the laxative tea is because during this fast you are not consuming fiber so the tea or the the salt water is the substitute for what the fiber would do in your body (bowl movements). If you really had to eat food during this fast because of a social occasion, etc. a raw vegetable only salad would not have an adverse effect on your liver because the raw vegetables have the same effect as the lemon and pepper in stimulating the bile in the liver and the raw vegetables provide the fiber that the tea is a substitute for. What you will want to completely avoid is all other sugars (except for the maple syrup or agave), all processed foods, flours, preservatives, flavourings, etc. because all of these greatly inhibit the liver bile production process. As for medications, if they are necessary then do not stop taking them without talking to you doctor first but for vitamins keep taking the ones that are beneficial to your liver to aid in the cleansing process like Omega 3, B vitamins, etc.

Victoria, I am on day four of the MC. The first day right off, (I'm guessing due to the drink) my body purged itself of waste. I did use the SWF and did not get anything happening from that so I added the laxative tea and really nothing happened with that..could this be due to having been on metformin for the past two years and having loose bowels from it and it cleaned things out? Also, my tongue went from quite pink to covered in white, this means toxins are ridding them self from the body correct? Can't wait for it to go away...

Thanks!

I am on day 3 and I already feel sooooo much better! The evening of day one was awful, but once I got past that I slept better than I have in months and I have so much more energy, I am thinking clearer, less hot flashes....it is truly amazing! I'm not hungry and I'm not cold like on other fasts, I think that because of the cayanne pepper. I can hardly wait to see how I feel after 10 days!

Hi all, this is Sandi. Tha main thing to remember about the MC is that it is not a fad diet to drop weight or get skinny quick. It really is a lifestyle change. The will power and habits you get during the cleanse and especially when you break the cleanse and begin eating solid foods again are really important to keep. We tend to eat cuz we crave, or cuz food tastes good. Not because we actually need food. Keep this all in mind after the cleanse is over.

I am on day 1 of the cleanse, this is my second attempt on MC, last time I couldnt do it because the pepper made me feel so sick, I just couldnt stomach the mixture. This time I found out about the cayenne capsules and it is so much better. You still feel the little burn in your belly but not the same.

My question is about the measurements for the cap... I have 450mg capsules, does anybody know exactly how much this equals out to?
