Stanley Burroughs' Master Cleanse is one of the most powerful ways to cleanse heavy metals and candida from the body for optimal health and quick, healthy weight loss.
Cleansing is necessary to keep our bodies functioning at their best. Pollution from the environment, oxidative stress, and additives (pesticides, chemical colors and flavorings) in our water and food are stored in organs and fatty tissue and build up in our bodies over time. Cleansing this toxic load can help to boost the immune system, improve vitality, get rid of headaches, allergies, fatigue, pain, arthritis and other symptoms, and can result in substantial weight loss. One of the most powerful dietary cleanses is the Lemon Cleanse or Master Cleanse.
Where the Lemon Cleanse Began
The lemon cleanse was developed by Stanley Burroughs and is laid out in his 1976 book, Healing for the Age of Enlightenment. The book addresses several unconventional aspects of health care, including Vita Flex reflexology, color therapy, and the lemon cleanse. A smaller book by Burroughs, The Master Cleanser, covers only the cleanse.
Despite the wealth of information about the master cleanse that is available on the internet and by word of mouth, it is advisable to read one of these books before attempting the lemon cleanse to get the details right and avoid adverse effects.
What is the Master Cleanse?
The master cleanse consists of 6 to 12 glasses a day of:
This protocol is used for at least ten days, although the cleanse may be followed for up to a month. The cleanse is completed when white buildup on the tongue fades and it appears pink again (showing all candida is gone).
Food is not consumed during the cleanse; instead, a glass or two of the “lemonade” mixture is consumed whenever hungry. A laxative tea is also used during the cleanse.
Special protocols are laid out for coming off of the master cleanse which should be followed completely.
Maple syrup is one of the few unprocessed good sugars that provide micronutrients as well as calories to the body. It is high in minerals including zinc and manganese. For the Master Cleanse, Burroughs recommends grade B because it contains more minerals than the lighter grades of maple syrup. It is also less likely than grade A (light) syrup to contain formaldehyde.
If you prefer, agave may be substituted for maple syrup in the master cleanse.
Is the Master Cleanse a Fast or a Starvation Diet?
No.
The master cleanse is more gentle on the body than a fast. Most cleansing fasts leave a person incapacitated or in bed for their duration. On the master cleanse, the only inconvenience is making sure to have ready access to the ingredients. Many people report high energy levels and productivity even during the cleanse.
Maple syrup provides for the body’s caloric needs even as the lemon, cayenne, and high water intake encourage toxins and buildup to leave the body. Minerals and vitamins are provided by the mineral-rich maple syrup and lemon juice (which is high in vitamin C and other nutrients). The master cleanse is not intended to be used permanently, but it is completely safe in the short term provided the directions are closely followed.
The Primary Goal of a Cleanse Is Not Usually to Lose Weight...
...but substantial weight loss can be one result.
If you don’t want to lose weight or find you are losing weight too quickly, add more maple syrup to each glass of “lemonade” or increase your intake in glasses per day.
The master cleanse is not for everyone. Please read Burroughs’ book and consult with an expert before beginning the cleanse.

I think the diet was a great ideal but do i eat with this drink?
May 1, 2008 3:30 PM
Victoria Anisman-Reiner :
No, while doing a proper master cleanse you should eat/drink NOTHING except
for the lemonade beverage and the tea prescribed for the cleanse.
I highly recommend that anyone considering doing such a cleanse read one
of Stanley Burroughs books and reread the lemon cleanse instructions
thoroughly to be sure to get the entire process right!

I started the master cleanse and only lasted 3 days on it. I developed on
the 3rd day a sort of urinary tract infection. I stopped drinking the
juice at night that day and just drinking water and through the night
continued urinating. My urine became normal looking and no more burning
sensation by the morning time. I most definetely had an adverse reaction
to the ingredients. I will be going to the doctor this morning anyway to
tell him this same story. My younger sister did the diet and lasted the
whole 10 days. She had no adverse effects. Janet/Boynton Beach, FL

Victoria Anisman-Reiner :
In response to "Guest," who asked about using "lemon
juice" instead of "real lemons":
No, I would not
recommend it. Most bottled lemon juices have other ingredients, either
sweeteners or preservatives. Even if you can find a packaged lemon juice
that contains nothing but lemon, the contents will not be the same as
fresh-squeezed lemon juice. Juicers are often told that fruit and vegetable
juices begin to lose their potency as quickly as ten minutes after being
pressed. Anything bottled is not as "alive," for lack of a better
term, than juice that came straight from the fruit.
I would
recommend holding off on doing the cleanse until you have reliable access
to fresh lemons for at least a ten day period.

My husband and I both started this cleanse today. We both have had 7
servings, when are we suppose to see the cleanse happen? What is the cyenne
pepper suppose to do? I know that it happens with time, but is this
something that is going to make us constipated? Sorry, that is the only way
I know how to put it. Thank you. :)
May 14, 2008 11:25 AM
Victoria Anisman-Reiner :
Hi scrappnut,
I would highly recommend that you read either The
Master Cleanser or Healing for the Age of Enlightenment by Stanley
Burroughs, which details both the instructions for the proper cleanse and
answers all of the questions you've asked. Briefly:
The cleanse
takes 10 days or more to complete, but most people notice a change within
their bodies in the first few days.
Cayenne pepper is cleansing
and provides heat to the body, while you are not consuming much.
You should not feel constipated if you are using the laxative tea that
Burroughs recommends, or a similar product.
Best of luck with
your cleanse!

I am on day 3 of the cleanse today. I am a BIG food lover, and since I have
a low income as an international student studying in the US, I generally
eat what is cheap and filling. (Ususlly the over processed foods such as
$1.25 frozen pizzas, the $0.33 burritos, and the good old $0.13 ramen
noodles. Other than that I aet taco bell, churches chicken, chinese food,
Jamaican patties, Wendy's etc... Nevertheless, on my day 3 I am not
hungry. I hear that the body detoxes itself when it needs to and does not
need the master cleanse to do so...but at least I am giving my body a break
form food digestion, and I am getting my colon cleaned. (plus shedding a
few pounds)

I've been on the master cleanse for 3 days now and I've drank 3 glasses of
the laxative tea and still nothing has happened. Am I doing something
wrong?
Jul 12, 2008 6:59 AM
Victoria Anisman-Reiner :
Dear CherryMoon,
That depends! What do you mean by "nothing
has happened"?
If you are following the directions laid out
in Stanley Burroughs' book, or in The Complete Master Cleanse by Tom
Woloshyn, then you're doing just fine.
It sounds, however, like
you may be following an incomplete set of instructions. Why have you had
only three glasses of laxative tea, instead of six? You should be drinking
the tea (or doing an internal salt water bath) morning and evening during
this cleanse.
I highly suggest you refer back to one of the
books that details how to do the cleanse properly, if you truly feel that
"nothing is happening."

Just 2 weeks ago I cleansed my bowels for a colonoscopy. (I have them
every 2 years due to ulcerative colitis but have been symptom free for 4
years after starting the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.) My question is... if
I do the Master Cleanse will it continue to pull more toxins from my body
than magnesium citrate will do? I'm assuming mag cit. will just empty the
bowels not remove toxins?? thanks, Heather, age 37

No, I
wouldn't suggest beginning a cleanse based on the information on this site
alone. There are a lot of details and particular strategies for the cleanse
that you're only going to find in one of the books devoted to this cleanse.
If you can't find Burroughs' book, I highly recommend The Complete Master
Cleanse by Tom Woloshyn - it may even be a better guide than Burrough's
original writings. But please don't begin the cleanse without the book or
supervision from an expert.

I thank you for providing an in depth, informative article on the cleanse.
It has received so much flack that it's been hard to find real details and
instructions. However, I have two questions: I'm hesitant to
include maple syrup while doing the cleanse. I'm afraid that consuming it
in this way will make me queasy. I'm not a big fan of syrup unless it's on
pancakes. If I leave out the maple syrup, will the cleanse still be worth
doing and be effective? And second, would it be okay for you to
provide one or two recommended tips provided by Burroughs for coming off of
the cleanse? I do not have access to his book(s) at the moment. Again
thank you very much for your help, Victoria.

I would suggest, instead of waiting for a reply., go and purchase the book.
Like Victoria has stated to recent post, it is the best way to understand
the process. The book is only 6.50 at borders!, it's only about 50 pages.
I read it over the weekend and plan on starting on tomorrow. It answers
every question on here and lets you know what to expect and how to safely
come off of the lemonade diet. Please if you are really interested in the
master cleanser, GET THE BOOK! try borders.com for less expensive used
copies, but honestly...6.50 is not bad!

I don't know of any substitute for the cayenne - it really is a very

I suggest speaking with a
holistic practitioner in your area who can advise you. For your

This master cleanse buisness is crazy-sure if you eat a surplus of maple
syrup it will "provide for your caloric needs" but what about
vitamins and minerals-protien is absolutley vital for healthy cell
function. What about eliminating where the toxins and chemicals are coming
from? Sure organic food is expensive but so is cancer. Lemon water daily
and fresh, organic, local food is better-and stops problems before they
start. Healthy habits=Healthy body.

Such critics...
Anyway, I'm on my third day of the cleanse. It
has helped me to realize I tend to eat out of habit and not hunger. I have
had moments of weakness to snack (on my usual healthier options) but I
didn't give in. My girlfriend decided to do the cleanse with me so it makes
it much easier to have the support.
I have moderate to severe
asthma, so for the past few years I have made drastic changes in what I
eat, how I eat and how I treat my body. It's bad enough I have to take
these medications, but this cleanse has been a relief in more ways than
one.
I already appreciate the fact that I want to be even more
careful with food choices as I exit the cleanse.

Hi there, I have an important question about using this cleanse with my LPR
reflux. I no longer take medication. To my surprise I discovered that if
I drank GreensFirst every morning the symptoms don't bother me at all. I
say suprise because I started taking after I had pneumonia to cleanse my
liver and boost my immune system not as an antacid. I also noticed when I
DON'T drink it for even 1-2 days that I have alot of symptoms. That brings
me to the question of this cleanse: is the cayenne going to aggrevate my
acid problems? And if I'm not allowed to drink the GreensFirst (all
organic veggies and herbs) what if I start to have LPR symptoms? I plan to
get the book today, but I don't know if this concern will be addressed.

Regarding Teeth... I've been on the cleanse for a little over a week
and have noticed that my teeth (on the tops of the molars) feel
gummy/sticky. At first I was worried that the lemon juice was eating
at my tooth enamel so I began drinking the lemonade through a straw. I'm
sure the gummy-ness was from the maple syrup...and the feeling is much less
noticeable now that I'm using the straw. I'm a bit of a teeth freak,
and I assume that others are too, so I thought that I'd post this. Good
luck everyone.

Hi everyone. I am on day 3 of my cleanse and I HIGHLY recommend reading the
original book by Stanley Burroughs or going to Peter Glickman's site
http://therawfoodsite.com/index.html. I found that the Burroughs/Glickman
books and the website answer all the questions. Plus they include blogs of
individual's concerns and questions. The one thing I have found is that the
recipe MUST be followed exactly with no changes or exceptions for this to
work. That means fresh organic lemons only, grade B maple syrup
only, cayanne pepper to taste or 1/10 of a teaspoon, and you absolutely HAVE
to do the salt water flush. I am on day three and have lost 4 pounds and
feel pretty good. Good luck to everyone!

Ok, first off. You DO NOT have to follow the ingredients EXACTLY like it
says. There is an alternate diet for people with or at risk for diabetes.
It replaces the Grade B Syrup with Agave Nector, which tastes a whole
helluva lot better! Second, I am just using it to lose pounds before my
Military Physical Training Test comes around. So I've been using Aquafina
Grape/Raspberry flavored water to help negate some of the monotony of
lemons lemons lemons. I've been on it for about 6 days and have lost a
solid 10lbs. So if you can't find the instructions for this product
online, then you need to have someone help you, because all I see are
people in here trying to sell the book.

In response to some questions on this board:
I do not always
have access to real lemons. Can lemon juice be used? If so how much? Yes.
Although, lemons ARE recommended, limes can be used to replace them when
they're not available. They both share cleaning/antimicrobrial properties,
and can get the job done.
I've been on the master cleanse for 3
days now and I've drank 3 glasses of the laxative tea and still nothing has
happened. Am I doing something wrong? You either 1) may be constipated 2)
may not have much in your intestinal tract to release. My suggestion is to
use a mild natural laxative like bentonite OR drink some natural green tea
(YOGI ENERGY). You should also be doing the salt water flushes as
recommended by Burroughs.
i tried it... i lasted one day, it was
too hot.do you have to use the cayenne pepper? YES. YES. YES. However,
cayenne capsules are a great alternative to powder. Many people do not
enjoy adding this pepper to their drink and see the same benefits in taking
3-4 100mg capsules per day. They are available along with the Cayenne
tincture (an easier way to measure on the go).
What kind of
laxative tea is used with this cleanse? Smooth Move by Traditional
Medicines has the best reviews.
I am on two daily medications
and I also take a multivitamin every evening. Can I still take this during
the cleanse? What about smoking? You need to ask your healthcare
practitioner. Most likely, if the meds are vital to your health and
well-being, you need to continue taking them. You should not smoke during
the cleanse. One of the key goals during the cleanse is to eliminate the
bad habits and addictions that your body has grown accustomed to.

almost forgot why i posted again. i think to do this correctly for whoever
i woul say to continue as long as u hav eliminations or 30 days or
whatever. if u quit while still having eliminations,,than have u
completely! cleasned? so next time i do this that will be my goal. believe
me while doing a cleanse, you main focus will be elimination of all those
toxins leaving ur body ..mahalo this has given me the will power needed to
do the cleanse once again
