Think you know the lemon cleanse? Think again. Tom Woloshyn updates and expands on the Master Cleanser in his new book, The Complete Master Cleanse.

In 1976, Stanley Burroughs published his health guide, Healing for the Age of Enlightenment, in which he presents vitaflex, color healing, and his piece of immortality: the lemon cleanse or "master cleanse." Although the lemon cleanse has been used and debated in health circles for many years, little has been done to update it or expand on it in print until the recent release of The Complete Master Cleanse (Ulysses Press, 2007).

Written by a student of Burroughs, Tom Woloshyn, The Complete Master Cleanse is a clear, helpful guide to the lemon cleanse. Woloshyn takes everything good in Burroughs' work, builds upon and clarifies it, while delving into science and medicine in ways that Burroughs only touched upon in his book.

The Best Possible Experience with the Lemon Cleanse

Woloshyn does an admirable job in The Complete Master Cleanse of clarifying the instructions for the cleanse and troubleshooting elements that were not fully explained in Burrough's original text.

Woloshyn describes the ingredients of the lemon cleanse in detail, along with their roles in the cleansing process. He spends a great deal of time on additional supplements and approaches that may be useful during a cleanse – such as essential oils, herbs, color therapy and vitaflex - as well as delineating which approaches, supplements and medication will interfere.

He also devotes a chapter each to the importance of parasite cleansing and emotional work to release thoughts and patterns that interfere with health.

Woloshyn stresses the importance of doing the master cleanse properly, citing the number of people who approach him with complaints or problems when they simply have not followed the directions.

Most Common Master Cleanse Mistakes

According to Woloshyn, who has been practicing and teaching the master cleanse for over 25 years, the three most common mistakes made during the master cleanse are:

  1. Premixing the lemonade, when each glass should be made fresh
  2. Not using the laxative properly, and
  3. Drinking too little of the lemonade mixture

People may experience discomfort and want to go off the cleanse, or declare that "the cleanse doesn't work!" when the problem, Woloshyn says, is simply in following the master cleanse directions to the letter – including the right way to return to normal eating after the cleanse.

Additional Aids to Cleansing

The Complete Master Cleanse suggests several aids to cleansing that can be added without interfering with the lemon cleanse. The following cleansing aids are "allowed" during the master cleanse because they do not require digestion and they speed the rate of cleansing:

  • herbs
  • herbal teas
  • essential oils
  • enzymes

Troubleshooting the Master Cleanse

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this book is the range of solutions it offers to those with specific concerns about elements of the master cleanse. Woloshyn presents:

  • Alternatives to orange juice for coming off the cleanse, but he counsels that even people allergic to cayenne pepper or lemons are usually fine on the cleanse itself.
  • Advice for dealing with cleansing reactions, if they occur, though he says, "These symptoms are, in fact, caused not by the master cleanse but by what you have done to your body in the past."
  • The connection between emotional and physical cleansing which some may find challenging during their first cleanse.
  • A personal, first-hand look at the experience of the master cleanse, from someone who has done the cleanse dozens of times.

i just stumbled across this page while trying to find the exact name of Woloshyn's book and just wanted to say that i also read this book and think it is absolutely GREAT!!!! also, he has his email address and phone number in the back of the book. i sent him an email with a question and got an answer within 24 hours!

spirited1, the freshly squeezed lemons are vital because of the great importance of consuming their *live* enzymes. this cannot be stressed enough. however, for people with a busy work schedule and such, he provides one alternative: make a concentrate. that is, mix equal parts of lemon juice and maple syrup into a container and use 4 tbsp of this concentrate (which will have an average of 2 tbsp lemon juice and syrup each) in preparing a serving of lemonade on the spot. if you do this, you HAVE to drink it as soon as the water and cayenne are added, because the enzymes might otherwise die within 10 minutes of adding the water (he says). but it should be noted that you ONLY want to do this when you CAN'T squeeze the lemons fresh. if you're at home all day on a Saturday, don't just make a concentrate for the entire day because you don't feel like squeezing lemons :). also, don't add cayenne in the concentrate itself; add it separately when it's ready to drink. otherwise (he says) the cayenne will "steep" and make it entirely too hot. good luck!

but again, i highly recommend his book. i'm quite the the science-y type, and i found MUCH fulfillment in his articulate explanations, while never veering from the spiritual aspect of it all.

In 2 hours I will have completed 10-days of the master cleanse.
I feel great, more energy and better skin tone. Also I lost 12 pounds.
I used a juicer to squeeze about 4 days worth of lemons and refrigerated it. I found this beneficial. I just simply scooped out the juice as required with a spoon.
