There are side effects to swine flu vaccines or any flu vaccinations. A closer look at alternative ways to build up immune system, fight infections and keep flu at bay.

Taking a swine flu vaccination should be an informed decision. Swine flu is not very different from normal flu, which spreads easily. Looking at the risks, vaccine side effects and alternatives to flu vaccinations will help people to make an informed choice regarding which route to take in protecting against swine flu.

This article examines some of the swine flu vaccinations alternatives, but it should be remembered that no medicine, alternative or otherwise, should be taken without consulting a qualified medical practitioner first.

Vitamin D

According to Adrian Gombart, Oregon State University, vitamin D is a "miracle nutrient" that activates the immune system to defend the body against invading microorganisms, including seasonal flu and swine flu. Vitamin D is said to be crucial to the functioning of the immune system. In addition, scientists have discovered that vitamin D can regulate the actions of genes that are important to bone health, calcium uptake and the regulation of cell differentiation.

Echinacea and Flu

Echinacea is famous as an immune builder and can stop an acute oncoming cold, flu or infection if used in large doses at the first sign of symptoms. Echinacea can also be taken preventatively since it stimulates the immune system. It can be combined with herbs with anti-viral properties such as oregano, olive leaf, or grapefruit seed.

Elderberry as Protection from Influenza

Elderberry is a good preventative herb. It is known for keeping viruses from replicating. Elderberry is a mild herb that can be taken daily, and is said to have positive side effects with antioxidant properties. A blend of elderberry, echinacea, olive and royal jelly called Elderberry Defense can aid in swine flu prevention.

Grapefruit Seed and Vitamin C

Grapefruit seed extract is said to be another good preventative. It is an aid to take for prevention and also to have on hand to help speed recovery from colds and flu.

Vitamin C is also widely used as a preventive for colds and flu. Vitamin C makes the body a poor host for viruses.

Other herbs and natural products said to have antiviral properties include elderberry, licorice, ginger, garlic and lemon grass.

According to Adriane Fugh-Berman, an alternative medicine physician, it is good to take herbs that stimulate the immune system. It is possible, however, to overstimulate the immune system, causing problems like inflammation and arthritis.

Once again, it is important to consult a medical professional to get a balanced viewpoint in dealing with swine flu alternatives.
