Exploring one of the three vital doshas of Ayurveda.
Pitta is one of three limbs (doshas) within the practice of Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a system of medicine that is thought by some to be the most ancient of all medical practices still in use today. By looking at the unique physical, emotional, and mental make-up of a person, Ayurveda divides people into three distinct categories.
At birth every new being is composed of a unique combination of the elements of air, fire, and water and according to the balance of these elements in the body it is thought that certain strengths and weaknesses in the realm of health will show themselves. It is vital thus for those who practice Ayurveda to first explore and discover which element carries the most weight in their constitution.
Pitta is the element of fire within the body. Fire is a valuable and dangerous ally. Though it provides energy and warmth, it is also reckless and destructive if left to lose control. Fire consumes, and breaks things down into very manageable and simple pieces, much like the digestion of food in the body. This breakdown in the body provides fuel to operate, and warmth to keep the body functioning properly. Fire is also the fuel of powerful emotions (most have heard the expression "burning with desire".)
Compared to Vatas, the Pitta type has intense ‘fiery’ moods that change rather slowly. Pittas are often referred to as "hotheads", and can lean towards anger and fierceness when disturbed. Though they are easily angered and show it, they are also determined, resourceful and charismatic. They are the genuine leaders amongst the doshas.
Pittas have very strong digestion, and food is very important to the sound function of their moods. They are the type to become very cranky and impatient when hungry, but usually are unable to remember what they were upset about when satiated. As their metabolisms are intense and strong, they are able to take large quantities of food and drink. Though their digestion is strong, they also have tendencies towards digestive disturbances. Pittas dislike spicy foods, and love cold food and drink.
The skin will often show the fire as well, tending to be flushed and freckled with many moles. Their hair greys early and is usually fine and thinner compared to the other doshas. They are moderate sleepers, but may have trouble resuming sleep if they are awakened. Heat and the sun tend to disturb the Pitta, and they perspire easily.
There are many books with self-quizzes for those who are interested in assessing their physical and mental body to see which dosha they most resemble. As Ayurveda has gained popularity in the western world, it has become more regular to see Ayurvedic information, clinics and products on the market.
