There are a variety of ways to protect the body from the influenza virus, prevent the spread of germs and boost the immune system.

This flu season, take the necessary precautions to keep immunity at its peak and prevent the onset of cold and flu viruses. There are a number of natural methods that can effectively protect the body and support a healthy and powerful immune system.

Prevent the Flu with Vitamin D

Studies indicate that flu season occurs during times when vitamin D deficiency is at its peak. Vitamin D plays a vital role in protecting the body against a variety of illnesses, including respiratory infections that can be caused by the flu.

The daily recommended adult dose of vitamin D is 400-600 IU. Foods rich in vitamin D include canned tuna, salmon, mackerel, sardines, eggs, fortified cereal and fortified milk. However, the sun is the best source of vitamin D and just 15 minutes of sunshine a day will help the body produce the required amount of vitamin D needed by the body.

Prevent the Flu by Cleansing the Sinuses and Oral Passages

The influenza virus enters the body through the mouth and the nose. Once the virus has entered the body, it will proliferate and multiply. Warm salt water is an excellent way to kill germs that have entered the nasal passages and mouth. Here are some tips for using warm salt water:

  • Rinse the mouth out twice a day with warm salt water.
  • Rinse or wipe the nasal passages daily with warm salt water.
  • Use a neti pot to relieve congestion with warm salt water.

It is also important to brush the teeth and tongue regularly. Routine cleansing of the sinuses and oral passages can effectively prevent the proliferation of viruses within the body.

Prevent the Flu by Washing Hands Regularly

The simple step of washing the hands with soap and water can greatly reduce the chances of getting sick during the flu season. Washing hands regularly will prevent the spread of germs and viruses.

Always wash hands before:

  • eating a snack or meal;
  • preparing any king of food.

Always wash hands after:

  • using the toilet;
  • changing a diaper;
  • handling raw meat during food preparation;
  • wiping a runny nose;
  • blowing the nose;
  • coughing or sneezing.

Keeping the hands clean is a simple and effective step for preventing the spread of germs and contracting an illness.

Prevent the Flu by Keeping the Hands Away from the Face

Touching the face, nose and mouth are one of the quickest ways to contract the flu virus. Rubbing the eyes, scratching the nose and coughing or sneezing into the hands is very common. However, most people do not take into consideration where their hands have been or what they have touched throughout the day prior to touching their face.

It only takes a second for viruses and germs to enter the mouth or nasal passages. Use Kleenex to blow the nose, cough and sneeze into the elbow and refrain from touching the face. If touching the face is necessary, make sure to wash hands with soap and water first.

Every year the flu strain changes; however, there are simple steps that one can take to avoid coming into contact with germs and spreading the influenza virus. Avoid the flu by maintaining a healthy diet, taking the recommended daily dosage of vitamin D, washing the hands regularly, and keeping sinuses and oral passages clean as well as keeping the hands away from the face.
