Parents can stop post nasal drip and relieve other symptoms that children with allergies experience by making changes at home and creating natural allergy remedies.

The discomforts caused by toddler allergies can be effectively treated using home remedies. Alternative methods of treatment are preferred by some parents due the public warnings issued related to the use of certain children's cough and cold medications. Some natural remedies for allergies involve making changes around the home. Others involve taking seasonings, and transforming them into natural allergy remedies.

Home Allergy Remedies

According to WebMD, parents can ease their toddler's symptoms by making simple allergy remedies at home. One home remedy that can alleviate children's allergies is to place a cool damp cloth over the child's eyes. This will help reduce the swelling and relieve the itchiness in the eyes. Do this throughout the day as often as it is needed.

Another simple and effective natural allergy remedy is petroleum jelly. According to 1,801 Home Remedies, by the editors of Readers Digest (Reader's Digest, April 2004), petroleum jelly traps spores and other airborne allergens. Put a little petroleum jelly under the child's nose. Dab a small amount inside of the nostrils to relieve soreness and caused by constant rubbing.

The book also says that saline nasal sprsys are effective remedies for allergies because they help eliminate mucous and keep the nasal passages moist. Parents can make a home made nasal saline solution by dissolving one teaspoon of salt into one cup of warm water. Put the mixture into a bulb syringe and spritz the solution into the nose of the child.

Honey can also offer natural allergy relief. Maoshing Ni, author of Secrets of Self Healing (Penguin Group, December 2007), recommends a daily dosage of one teaspoon of unprocessed honey to relieve symptoms. Never give honey to children who are 12 months old and younger due to the risk of infant botulism.

Reduce Child Allergy Symptoms By Eliminating Triggers

Parents can make certain changes in the home environment to bring relief to a sneezing child. Allergy symptoms are often brought on by dust, mold, animal dander and other allergens. This is why it is important to keep the home clean and minimize clutter. Carefully inspect the child's bedroom for potential allergens.

Children with allergies should limit their exposure to animals. If there is a pet in the home, keep it out of the child's bedroom. Regularly dust furniture and vacuum carpets. Check the filters in the air and heating systems for dust and mold. Replace them if necessary. Place hypoallergenic pillows and sheets and covers on the child's bed.

According to Mayo Clinic, some allergen blocking covers are especially effective remedies for allergies because they are made out of vinyl or fabric that is tightly woven, and can actually prevent dust mites from nesting in pillows and mattresses. Wash the sheets and pillow cases at least once a week in hot water to kill the allergens and dust mites. In order to effectively eliminate allergens, the water should be at least 130 degrees.

Children's allergies sometimes include a persistent cough. Parents can use natural cough remedies for children to relieve their little one's sore scratchy throat. The article titled Natural Common Cold Remedies provides more information on how to stop post nasal drip.
