Thyroid problems can lead to numerous health problems: sluggishness, fatigue, cold hands and feet, dry skin and hair, constipation, being overweight, and depression.

These are all symptoms of an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism. Diagnosing an underactive thyroid and regulating thyroid hormones can lead to a better quality of life. Combining natural remedies with a physician’s treatment can help in correcting thyroid hormones.

Diagnosing Thyroid Problems

The first step towards treatment for thyroid problems is receiving a diagnosis. A physician’s office can do a simple blood test to determine the amount of thyroid hormone in the body. Because endocrinologists argue as to the validity of the thyroid hormone blood test, an at-home test can be performed as well. Bill Gottlieb recommends doing a simple at-home test if the symptoms of an underactive thyroid are present. According to Gottlieb, a basal body temperature that is regularly one or two degrees below normal is a good indication of thyroid problems.

Place a glass thermometer on the nightstand next to the bed each night. When awaking in the morning, avoid movement except to reach for the thermometer. Take your temperature by placing the thermometer under the armpit for 10 minutes. If the temperature is in the low 96 to 97 degree range for at least six days in a row, there is a good chance that the thyroid is not producing normal amounts of thyroid hormone.

Natural Remedies for Treating Hypothyroid

According to Gottlieb, energy exercise can help release subtle energy to aid in bringing the thyroid gland back into balance. To do this type of energy exercise, lay on your back on a comfortable spot. Next, massage the upper abdominal area for a couple of minutes, where the diaphragm is located. Then, place one hand over the throat and start to make a sound while exhaling. Imagine the sounds are coming directly from the thyroid. This exercise can be done for up to ten minutes per day.

Sunlight is another natural remedy for thyroid gland problems, as light has a direct positive effect on all endocrine glands. Looking toward the natural sunlight, but not into it, first thing in the morning, can help improve gland production.

Gottlieb recommends avoiding foods with synthetic hormones, such as certain meat and dairy products. Thyroid problems can also be irritated by those suffering from a progesterone deficiency, such as premenopausal women. A natural progesterone cream can be beneficial in this situation.

Taking 500 to 1,000 mg of tyrosine, combined with iodine, can help reduce thyroid problems. Flaxseed oil or fish oil, taken between 3,000 and 6,000 mg per day can be helpful, as well.

Medication for Healing the Thyroid With Armour Thyroid

For those who are looking for natural prescription remedies, Armour Thyroid is a medication that must be prescribed by a physician. Armour is non-synthetic but due to its natural state is slightly harder to monitor the dosage than medications such as Synthroid. Close supervision by a doctor should be sought when receiving treatment for thyroid problems in order to avoid an improper dosage.
