Natural Migraine ReliefHeadache Remedies Involving Diet and Lifestyle
Natural headache remedies can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.
There are a number of different methods a person can use to get natural migraine relief. Migraines are headaches that can be extremely painful and they can last for several days. Some people have migraines that are so painful they have a hard time functioning in every day life. There currently is no cure for migraine headaches. However, there are medications and natural remedies that can help manage the symptoms. Many people who have migraines report seeing flashes of light or auras before an attack. They may also experience a throbbing pain which can affect one or both sides of the head. Migraines cause some people to be sensitive to light or loud sounds. Migraine headaches may also be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Although there is no cure for migraine headaches, there are some home remedies that can help reduce the pain. Herbal Migraine RemediesSome herbs are used as migraine remedies and can offer relief to people who are experiencing migraines. A topical herbal mixture is recommended in The Complete Idiot's Guide to Natural Remedies by Chrystle Fiedler (Alpha Books, January 2009). To make this treatment, combine one tablespoon of aloe vera gel, 3 drops of lavender, and 5 drops of peppermint. Apply the mixture on the back of the neck and temples. Several studies indicate that butterbur root extract can also offer natural migraine relief. One such study was published in the journal Neurology (December 28, 2004). The four month study involved 245 people between the ages 18 to 65. All of the participants had at least two bouts of migraines each month. More than half of the participants who took butterbur extract supplements experienced a significant reduction in the frequency and severity of their migraine attacks. Migraine Treatments Involving LifestyleSome migraine treatments involve making lifestyle changes. According to the non-profit organization, Help for Headaches, people who have migraines should take it easy during the evening. Take a warm shower or bath to loosen and relax muscles. Lie down on a flat surface and avoid bending over. Place a hot compress on the temple area. Rest is very important for people who experience migraine headaches. According to Mayo Clinic, most adults need at least six hours of sleep each night. Many people report that adequate sleep is one of the most effective natural headache remedies. Prepare for sleep by listening to soft music or by visualizing a calming scene. Try not to eat foods that trigger migraines. This can vary from person to person. This is why it is important to keep a journal detailing the frequency of the migraines and when they occur. This will make it easier to determine if the attacks are being caused by certain foods. Common migraine triggers include fatty foods, cheese, chocolate, alcohol, and citrus fruits.
