MDs Question Use of Type 2 Diabetes MedicationsWhat the Doctors Don't Tell You about "Diabetes Type-2" Syndrome
The true causes of Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Type-2 are disputed by the medical community. Find out about the debate here.
Non Insulin Dependent Type 2 Diabetes is a massive problem in the Western world; in the USA some 6 per cent of the population, or 18 million people, have been diagnosed with this "modern" disease. Worldwide, according to WHO statistics, possibly 170 million people have the disease and this is set to double by 2030. In Type 2 Diabetes some sufferers can make insulin, but insufficient for their body's needs whereas others make sufficient insulin but cannot utilize it to regulate their blood sugar. This gives rise to similar symptoms as insulin dependent diabetes, but which can be controlled by diet and lifestyle changes. This is Non-Insulin Dependent Type 2 Diabetes. Insulin Dependent Versus Non Insulin Dependent DiabetesThere appear to be many similarities between the two types of diabetes. However with non-insulin dependent diabetes (Type 2) the onset is usually later in life. This disease is often controlled by the use of tablets. Why is Diabetes Type 2 a "Modern" Disease?Within the medical community there is a lot of debate about this condition, which apparently didn't exist in the early part of the 20th century - at least not in the spiraling numbers that are being diagnosed now. Some doctors question the true nature of the disease and its causes - is insulin the cause or some other hormone or metabolic process? Is it linked to the way we live in the 21st Century? What "What The Doctors Don't Tell You" Are SayingWDDTY are warning that many doctors are ignoring the fact that diet and lifestyle are key to understanding and curing this disease because it is easier to prescribe medications than to persuade patients to change their habits. Medications that are Worse than the Disease? On the WDDTY web site it is also asserted that many patients with Type 2 diabetes that could easily be controlled with diet are being prescribed pills with side effects that could be worse than the disease itself. They encourage people to look at lifestyle and dietary changes to bring the body into a better state of health. According to Dr Sidney M. Wolfe of the US Public Citizen's Health Research Group, and author of Worst Pills, Best Pills (Washington, DC: Public Citizen's Health Research Group, 1993), "Doctors find it easier to prescribe a pill than to nag patients with type 2 diabetes to lose weight, the safest way to treat the condition." Naturopathic guru Dr. Mercola on his web site implies that insulin imbalance may not be the cause of Type 2 Diabetes. Other well known naturopathically trained MDs are joining in the questioning of chemical methods of treating this problem, including Australian Dr. Sandra Cabot who has written Diabetes Type 2 - It Can be Reversed Naturally. Natural Cures for Type 2 DiabetesLeading nutritionist Dr Stephen Davies advocates that by planning your meals properly and getting regular exercise the body can maintain healthy blood sugar levels (Lancet, 1991; 338: 774-8). Sometimes, he asserts, losing just 10 or 20 pounds (about half a stone to one and a half stone) is enough to bring it under control. Bringing your blood pressure down is also helpful. Ways to do this include eating less salt, and avoiding alcohol and smoking. Putting the Other Side of the Type 2 DebateIt has to be said that most doctors do agree with the mainstream view on Type 2 Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes and do ensure that patients are attending to lifestyle changes. As with all complex issues, generalizations should be avoided and a fair balance needs to be maintained. This is a highly complex issue which will continue to be debated. Sources of Information on Type 2 DiabetesFurther information on Type 2 Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes can be accessed through The American Diabetes Association and the UK Diabetes Association. There is also a good source of information on the BUPA UK web site. Other Suggestions for Helping with Non-Insulin Dependent Type 2 DiabetesIn natural healing circles it is believed that some Non-insulin dependant Type 2 diabetes symptoms can be linked to parasites, leaky gut syndrome and Candida Albicans yeast in the gut, all of which give rise to toxicity and impair the liver. Here are some more suggestions for improving overall health.
