Artichoke leaf extract and peppermint oil are natural cures for IBS and other gastrointestinal ailments.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disease that affects the large intestines. This condition can be managed using natural IBS remedies. IBS occurs when muscles in the intestines contract longer and tighter than they should. This can cause food to pass through the intestines too quickly, causing gas and diarrhea.

In other instances, IBS can cause food to move too slowly in the intestines causing constipation, a condition in which the stools become hard. People with irritable bowel syndrome may also experience bloating, cramping, abdominal pain, and gas. According to Mayo Clinic, IBS is usually chronic. However, there may be periods when the symptoms stop for a while.

IBS Herbal Treatment

Artichoke leaf extract is showing promise as an IBS herbal treatment. Research suggests this herb can help gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting, intestinal spasms, and gas. According to a German study published in Phytotherapy Research, artichoke leaf extract is especially effective in alleviating irritable bowel syndrome. Researchers evaluated 279 IBS patients.

The participants took a supplement containing 320 mg of dry artichoke leaf extract daily for six weeks during meals. Six weeks later, most patients noticed a dramatic improvement in their condition. Some of the patients reported that the artichoke leaf extract supplements worked better than other treatments they have tried.

Peppermint oil is another common and effective IBS herbal treatment. According to Prescription Alternatives by Earl Mindell and Virginia Hopkins (January 2009 McGraw-Hill Companies), peppermint works best when it is taken with caraway oil. The two oils are available as a combination supplement. Peppermint tea can also help soothe gastrointestinal ailments.

Diet for IBS

Yogurt is a food that should be included in a special diet for IBS patients. Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist Michael Picco recommends choosing brands that contain lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, the so called good bacteria. These bacteria aid the digestive process and can relieve the bloating, pain and gas associated with irritable bowel syndrome.

People who have IBS should be careful when eating dairy foods. Lactose intolerance is a common problem for people with IBS. One way around this is to drink small quantities of milk and to have it with food. In some cases, it may be necessary to eliminate milk from the diet altogether.

Foods that are rich in fiber are also effective IBS remedies. Fiber helps the intestines function properly. Adding fiber to the diet too fast can overwhelm the digestive system and cause gas and bloating. It's best to gradually start eating fiber foods. Foods that contain fiber include oats, berries, grains, seeds, and nuts.
