Sufferers from cystitis can make a quick and easy natural remedy to help ease the discomfort by using an everyday herb. Cumin seeds is a spice that is readily available.

Cystitis is a very common infection of the bladder usually caused by bacteria, which can multiply rapidly. Most bacteria get into the bladder by coming up the urethra from the outside, but sometimes they can enter from the kidneys or bloodstream. Cystitis is not as common in men as in women because men have a much longer urethra. Common symptoms of cystitis include

  • passing urine frequently,
  • a burning sensation when passing urine,
  • discomfort or pain low down in the abdomen, and
  • sometimes a fever or blood in the urine.

Well Documented Remedies for Cystitis

There are a number of ways to alleviate the immediate symptoms and get long term relief.

  • Drinking plenty of water. This helps to increase the production of urine and help wash the bacteria out of the bladder.
  • Using urinary alkalinisers available from pharmacies. The alkalinisers reduce the acidity of the urine to make it more difficult for the bacteria to survive and also help to reduce the pain and discomfort.
  • Drinking cranberry juice may help to reduce the risk of cystitis.
  • Obtaining a course of antibiotics from a doctor. A severe attack of cystitis or recurrent bouts of cystitis need medical attention.

How to Use Cumin Seeds to get Relief from the Discomfort of Cystitis

Using cumin seeds is a little known home remedy that relieves the immediate discomfort and pain of cystitis and can help to alleviate the problem altogether in the long term. Cumin is widely used in Sri Lanka daily. Various recipes include cumin seeds either as a whole or in powder form. Cumin is one of many spices that are used for home remedies of various ailments by Sri Lankans.

  • Boil a handful (about quarter cup) of cumin seeds in two cups of water until the liquid resembles a lighter shade of black tea. (It is important not to 'over boil' the mixture as this can make it very strong and therefore not very palatable).
  • Leave to cool and drain.
  • It can be drunk as is or with a teaspoon of brown sugar or honey added to sweeten the cumin tea.
  • Drink as often as desired.

Advantages of Drinking Cumin Tea

It is a purely natural ingredient used as a spice in everyday cooking in many countries. Cumin tea has a distinctive flavour and a warm aroma. Therefore it is pleasant to drink and contains no adverse chemicals. The cumin is cheap to buy and the cumin tea is quick and easy to make.

Having a pack of cumin seeds in the house can come in handy if an attack of cystitis strikes in the night or at a time difficult to get to a pharmacy or a doctor.
