Taking an essential fatty acid supplement on a daily basis can help protect the brain and heart from deterioration.

There are numerous healing qualities that exist in fish oil. Benefits include keeping the heart healthy, supporting healthy brain functioning, and easing the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Fish oil is beneficial to human health because it contains omega-3 fatty acids. Although these essential fats are necessary in order for people to stay healthy, the body is unable to produce them.

A person can get omega-3 fatty acids by eating fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel. It is also possible to get omega-3 fatty acids by taking a fish oil capsule supplement. Get advice from a doctor before using fish oil supplements. They can cause interactions with certain medications, and may pose a risk of bleeding in some people.

Fish Oil Health Benefits for the Heart

It has long been known that fish oil health benefits include protection from heart disease. Now there is increasing evidence that fish oil pills can reduce the likelihood of heart attacks and death from heart disease among people who already have heart disease. This topic was thoroughly examined in a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (August 11, 2009).

Researchers came up with daily recommendations for the daily intake of omega-3 fatty acids after reviewing the results of numerous studies involving tens of thousands of patients. They found that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), found in fish oil, help support healthy functioning of the heart and stabilize blood pressure. Researchers recommend taking 500mg fish oil pills containing DHA and EPA daily. Heart patients need 800 to 1,000 mg.

Fish Oil Benefits for Arthritis Patients

Fish oil can also help people who have rheumatoid arthritis. People with this condition often experience pain and swelling in their joints. This can make walking and other forms of movement very difficult. While there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, fish oil can offer some relief because of the anti-inflammatory properties contained in omega-3 fatty acids.

According to Primer on Rheumatic Diseases (13th Edition), numerous studies indicate that patients with rheumatoid arthritis, who regularly consume omega-3 fatty acids are less likely to have tender joints. However, it was not effective in reversing damage to the joints. In order to get the maximum benefits, patients should take a fish oil capsule that is at least 30 percent EPA/DHA.

Improve Memory and Concentration with Fish Oil

There is strong evidence that fish oil can improve memory and concentration, reducing a person's chances of developing Alzheimer's disease. Researchers believed the DHA contained in omega-3 fatty acids is responsible for providing the brain boosting benefits. They came to this conclusion following a study that was published in The Archives of Neurology (November 2006).

They found that people who ate at least two servings of fish each week were 39 percent less likely to develop dementia. Researchers in this study say their results support findings from similar studies which suggest that healthy brains contain high levels of DHA, while Alzheimer's patients have low DHA levels in their brains.
