Energy work has existed for thousands of years in almost every indigenous culture, often in the guise of what we consider “folk medicine” or “witchcraft.” In today’s world, some of these ancient systems of energy healing have gained quiet acceptance: you may be familiar with Ayurveda, Native American medicines, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Acupuncture, or Reiki. Today’s therapists present energy healing in new and more scientifically available ways (such as John Thie’s groundbreaking Touch for Health and the Dennisons’ Brain Gym). Among these new paradigms, there is no system more comprehensive or more reputable for healing mental, emotional, and physical well-being than Donna Eden’s Energy Medicine.
Energy Medicine is a system of energy work assembled and taught by Donna Eden, and the title of her book on the same subject. Built on the shoulders of several giants of ancient and modern energy healing, Energy Medicine is used to heal and improve well-being in subtle, non-invasive ways.
Energy Medicine depends on the connections between the energy anatomy of our bodies (the energy meridians and chakras) and our physical anatomy - the organs, muscles, bones, and tissues that make up our physical systems. Subtle corrections and changes in the body’s energy system can have a profound impact on physical and mental being - and can contribute to either illness or healing.
The most basic Energy Medicine protocols depend on the meridian system from Traditional Chinese Medicine, which relates each of 14 energy lines or “meridians” to major organs and systems of the human body (the lungs, heart, stomach, liver, spleen/pancreas, etc.). Even the gentlest massage or pressure at specific points on these meridians can stimulate (strengthen) or sedate (weaken) the corresponding systems of the body - to good or ill effect. Sedating the heart meridian, for instance, is never done because of the heart's critical role; however, sedating the triple warmer meridian, which corresponds to the thyroid and adrenal glands, calms the body’s adrenaline stress response and can be used to relieve tension, calm hyperactive children, or to relax the body for more restful sleep.
Several of the energy “corrections” in the Energy Medicine model are physical stretches and movements which help the body deal more easily with stress and emotional challenges. Self-destructive habits and thought processes, and even depression, seem to have parallels in the body’s energy field. Similar to energy psychology, Energy Medicine offers simple activities which can, when done daily, keep the body-mind more cheerful, receptive, alert and self-loving by keeping the body’s energy flow moving in the right direction.
Energy medicine has practical uses - both for help every day with tiredness, calming hyperactive kids, easing soreness or muscle pain, relieving stomachaches or back pain, and helping to calm the mental and emotional demons that can grip us. It’s also helpful in healing chronic or more severe health problems.
