Cuddy designed SquidFace for his own comfort so he could sunbathe facedown without aggravating his back and neck pain. The newly patented pillows have several uses.

The motto of Bob Cuddy’s fledgling company ComforTan is “comfort, facedown, anywhere.” That’s because his original product, the SquidFace pillow, was designed to be used for sunbathing on the beach in comfort - even for someone with spinal problems. The spinoff ComfyRest pillow is intended for indoor use by stomach sleepers and massage clients.

What are the SquidFace and ComfyRest?

The SquidFace and ComfyRest are specialty pillows for relaxation and pain relief. Their design is original and newly patented. Constructed of a round head rest with two longer, soft squid-like arms, the pillows can be used in a dozen or more different ways to allow restful facedown sleep, sunbathing, or comfort during massage or travel.

The pillow is strange-looking, but well-designed for comfort. The round head rest has two soft rings atop each other, with mesh channels between that allow air flow when the pillow is used facedown for massage, sleep, or while sunbathing. The ComfyRest is a creative option instead of propping your face and chest up on several pillows and a portable alternative to a massage table.

According to the publicity materials, “SquidFace™ pillows solve an age-old ergonomic problem—how to tan face down without twisting your neck and body into unnatural and uncomfortable positions and still be able to breathe.”

Who can use it?

Bob Cuddy designed the SquidFace for his own comfort, then got a patent and started marketing it when it worked so well.

Bob had been annoyed when he was unable to sunbathe comfortably on holiday because of back and neck pain due to a herniated disk, and set out to find a solution that would enable him to enjoy his vacation despite this spine problem.

He claims that the SquidFace/ComfyRest has helped people with chronic health conditions, although these claims are unsubstantiated.

The pillow can be used for facedown or side sleep, or resting facedown while sunbathing or during massage; it’s equally useful as a head and neck rest in bed, while reading or traveling, and even as a lap rest. The pillow “arms” are adjustable and can be clipped in four different positions for use. Either pillow can be helpful in relieving snoring.

What’s the difference between the SquidFace and the ComfyRest?

The SquidFace is the original pillow. Designed for beach use, the yellow SquidFace reflects more heat and its contents are more water-resistant than the ComfyRest. The ComfyRest is a soft blue cushion for indoor use. Otherwise, they are identical.

Both pillows are made from soft terrycloth and both contain only materials that are considered hypoallergenic.

N.B.: If you use the SquidFace or ComfyRest while sunbathing, watch that you don’t get too much sun! Make sure to apply sunscreen and drink plenty of fluids to avoid sunburn and prevent heatstroke.
