Licorice root is highly recommended for people who are coping with excessive tiredness.

There are some natural chronic fatigue syndrome treatments that can offer relief to people who are living with this potentially debilitating condition. Many people who have this condition report that their excessive tiredness does not subside no matter how much sleep or rest they get. Chronic fatigue syndrome can also cause a loss of memory and concentration, or joint or muscle pain.

According to Mayo Clinic, the cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown. However, conditions that are thought to be possible contributing factors include a weak immune system, a viral infection, insufficient hormone levels, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, a lack of iron, or depression. Anyone who is having symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome should see a doctor before starting alternative treatments.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Diet

For people who have chronic fatigue syndrome, diet is important to their sense of well being. A well balanced diet can help replenish vitamins and nutrients that may be deficient in the body. Foods that support the healthy functioning of the immune system are recommended in Prescription for Natural Cures by James F. Balch and Mark Stengler (John Wiley & Sons, September 2004).

Whole grain foods and sea vegetables can offer much needed minerals. Yogurt and other foods containing probiotics, the so called good bacteria, are good for the immune system and help the body fight off infection. Fish such as salmon and mackerel contain omega-3 fatty acids, which also boost the immune system.

Intestinal pain is a common problem for some people with chronic fatigue syndrome. Foods that are high in fiber can offer relief to the digestive tract and help keep it functioning properly. Fruits, grains, pasta, cereal, nuts and vegetables are all sources of fiber. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day to rid the body of toxins.

Certain foods can cause excessive tiredness and should be avoided by people with chronic fatigue syndrome. Processed foods, alcohol, caffeine, and foods that are high in sugar can make symptoms worse. Some people who have chronic fatigue syndrome may also have sensitivities to wheat or gluten. One way to test this is to go a few weeks without eating wheat or gluten foods to see if the symptoms improve.

Treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome With Herbs

Licorice root is an herb that is used for a variety of healing purposes including treating chronic fatigue syndrome. It is believed that hormonal imbalances contribute to the onset of chronic fatigue syndrome. Licorice root helps correct some of those imbalances. According to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Treatment Guide by Erica F. Verrillo and Lauren M. Gellman (Quality Medical Publishing, 1998), the herb helps raise serum cortisol and adrenal hormones to adequate levels.

Astragalus is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to heal the body from physical, mental, and emotional stresses, as well as certain diseases. According to Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, and Lyme Disease By Burton Goldgerg, and Larry Trivieri (Ten Speed Press, January 2004), astragalus relieves numerous symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome including memory loss, joint pain, fatigue, and anxiety.
