Massage therapy is a wonderful way to treat health problems or to just relax and enjoy an afternoon.

If you're thinking of getting a massage, whether at a chiropractor's office or a day spa, you will have many different massage therapy treatments from which to choose. There are many different reasons to have a massage, including injury treatment, relaxation, circulation improvement and stress therapy. Depending upon why you are getting massage therapy, you will need to choose what type of massage is best for you.

Relaxation Massage

Relaxation massages are used mainly by those who are seeking a way to unwind and relieve some stress. Whether recovering from a stressful event or a rough week at work, relaxation massages are a good treatment for those in need of some rest and recovery.

Sports Massage

Also called deep tissue massages, sports massages are great for those who are athletic and may have sore muscles due to over activity. Many athletes get regular sports massages to keep their muscles in the best shape possible and to prevent injury. This massage is definitely not for the beginner. It involves deep tissue work, which can be painful for those who might just be seeking relaxation. If you get a massage at your chiropractor's office, it will likely be a deep tissue massage.

Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy massage involves using essential oil during the massage therapy treatment. These scented oils are applied to the skin and depending on the oil, can be used to aid in sinus treatment or even help with joint problems.

Stone Massage

Stone massage therapy has been gaining popularity throughout the United States over the past few years. During a stone massage, hot and cold stones are applied to the body to aid in relaxation and provide a unique sensation. This massage is fun to try when you've had the regular relaxation massage and are ready for something different.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a massage therapy treatment in which pressure is applied to points on the feet, hands and ears to encourage healthy effects on other parts of the body. This treatment uses healing energy to improve general health and promote well-being.

No matter which massage therapy treatment you choose, be sure that your massage therapist is licensed and well qualified. Check websites for reputable spas and massage therapy offices to find one that is right for you. Many spas offer a full menu of massage therapy treatments, as well as hot baths and steam treatments. Once you decide on a spa, it's always a good idea to visit the spa before your appointment so that you can look over their menu of services and book the one that you want. Knowing which massage is right for you will go a long way towards having a therapeutic and relaxing massage.
