Multi-level marketing can be an amazing tool to financial freedom. But like anything else with a high rate of return, there are risks. Inform yourself in advance.

Multi-level marketing or "MLM" businesses have taken off in the natural health industry - so much so that most people have had a run-in with a friend, neighbour, or somebody else trying to sell them on their new business.

If you're considering getting involved with a network marketing or MLM company, here are the questions to ask first:

Three questions for the product:

Is the product really natural? Most of the “natural” products being pushed onto the market, whether by MLMs, neutraceuticals corporations, or health food or drug stores, aren’t really natural. Find out the truth so you won’t end up misleading potential clients.

Is the science there? How do you know?

How is this product better than other similar products? You'll need a "handle" if you're going to market it... and besides, why would you want to work with anything other than the best?

Three questions to ask your rep before you sign:

Were you using this product as a customer before you became a distributor? If the MLM aspect of the company shut down, would you keep using it? Is this product good enough for them to use it for themselves and their family, or are they only in it for the money?

How much money did you actually make last month? If they avoid the question or offer a pat, formulaic response, the compensation plan is either not as good as they think or they may not be the best person for you to work with. Network marketing is a people business - it's important that you trust your enroller, since they're the one who's going to be teaching and assisting you.

Can you explain the compensation plan to me in less than 3 minutes? Most MLM companies offer bonuses which may take some time to wrap your head around - but the meat and potatoes of their payment plan should be simple enough for a child to understand in under 3 minutes. If it's not, it's either a flaw of the plan or a problem with your rep's presentation of it - and probably their comprehension.

Three questions to ask yourself:

How much time am I going to commit to a new business?

Am I willing to stick with this even if my business struggles a little at first, to learn the skills and habits I will need to succeed in the long run?

Am I willing to commit to continuing to educate myself so that I can provide the best and most current information to myself, my reps and the people I train and bring into this business?

Multi-level marketing can be vastly rewarding on a personal, relational, and a financial level. The trick to success in this business is knowing enough in advance to ensure a comfort level with both the ethical position and the rules of the company and people you involve yourself with. Asking the right questions can improve the odds that your new business will be a pleasure for you and everyone involved, and thrive for years to come!
